Apple Watch Integration

The ErgZone app has an Apple Watch companion app that allows ErgZone+ members to:

  • View heart rate from their Apple Watch on the ErgZone app paired with their watch;
  • View heart rate from their Apple Watch on the PM5v2 or higher;
  • Stop a workout from the Apple Watch app;
  • Control audio from the Apple Watch during a workout.

Note:

While you can run ErgZone seamlessly on multiple devices, for example, sometimes you can use ErgZone on your iPhone and others on your iPad. The ErgZone watch app will only work when using the ErgZone app on the paired mobile device. This is a limitation of how the Apple Watch device works.

Getting Started

For it to work, there are 3 REQUIRED steps you need to do from your iPhone. Here it is:

  1. Install the app on your Apple Watch.
  2. Permit ErgZone to read Health information.
  3. Enable the Apple Watch on your iPhone's ErgZone app.

Install the ErgZone app on the Apple Watch

  1. On your iPhone, open the App Store app.
  2. Search for ErgZone.
  3. Download the latest version.

    Apple Watch support requires ErgZone app version 1.2.0 or higher.

  4. Open the Watch app.
  5. Scroll to the "Installed on Apple Watch" section to verify if ErgZone is on the list.
    1. If not, scroll to the "Available apps" section.
    2. Find ErgZone.
    3. Click on the "Install" button.

For more details on installing or finding an app on your Apple Watch, visit Apple's Guide: Download apps on your Apple Watch.

Allow ErgZone to Read Health Information.

  1. On your iPhone, open the Settings app.
  2. Scroll down and click on the "Health" option.

  3. Click on the "Data Access & Devices" option.

  4. Click on "ErgZone."
  5. Click the "Turn On All" button to enable all required permissions.

  6. If you prefer not to enable all options, the minimum required is:
    1. On the "ALLOW ERGZONE TO WRITE" section:
      1. Active Energy
      2. Heart Rate
      3. Workouts
    2. On the "ALLOW ERGZONE TO READ" section:
      1. Active Energy
      2. Heart Rate
      3. Workout

If you fail to enable all required permissions, your Apple Watch will not send heart rate data to ErgZone.

Setup the ErgZone App to Use the Apple Watch HR Info

  1. On your iPhone, open the ErgZone app.
  2. Click on the "Settings" icon (gear icon on the top left of the ErgZone app).
  3. On the ErgZone+ section, look for the "Apple Watch." option.
  4. Click on the dropdown.
  5. Choose between the following options:
    1. Disabled
      When disabled, the ErgZone watch app will not send data to the app or PM5.
    2. HR in app
      When selected, heart rate information from your watch will be displayed only on the ErgZone app on your phone during a workout.
    3. HR in app & PM5
      When selected, heart rate information from your watch will be displayed on the ErgZone app on your phone and the PM5 during a workout.

How does the ErgZone watch app work?

The ErgZone app on the Apple Watch will collect and send data to the ErgZone app on your iPhone.

When you start a workout on the ErgZone app on the paired iPhone, it will automatically:

  • Start the ErgZone app on your watch;
  • Read the heart rate information from the Apple Watch;
    • Send it to the ErgZone app on the iPhone paired with that watch during a workout.
    • Send it to the PM5.

How do you stop the workout from the watch?

  1. On your watch.
  2. Open the ErgZone app.
  3. Swipe right.
  4. Click on the "Stop Workout" button.

  5. The watch app will stop the workout on the iPhone and PM5.

How to control what you listen to from the ErgZone watch app?

  1. During the workout, swipe to the left to bring the audio control.

Troubleshooting

Need help finding the ErgZone app on your Apple Watch?

Things to check:

Did you start a workout on your iPhone, but the app on the watch is not receiving data?

Things to check:

The ErgZone app on my Apple Watch started an activity, but my heart rate is always 0.

Things to check:

Please ensure that:

  • You have the ErgZone app version 1.2.0 or higher installed on your iPhone.
  • You are running the ErgZone app on the device that is paired with the Apple Watch;
  • You have selected "HR in app & PM5" in your iPhone Setting on the ErgZone app.

    Click here to learn how to do that.

  • Check your PM5 version.

    Only PM5v2 and higher are compatible with receiving Heart Rate data from the app.

    Note that this is a limitation on the PM5, not the ErgZone app.

  • Tighten your Apple Watch to your wrist. We noticed that the loose watches might stop sending heart rate data to the app.
  • Try moving your Apple Watch towards your forearm. We noticed that the Apple Watch sits too close to the hands or on top of the wrist bone, so it may be unable to read heart rate information.
  • Please get in touch with us at support@erg.zone, and our team will help you.

Do I have a PM5v2 or higher?

You can check if you have a PM5v2 or higher by the color of the Concept2 logo on the PM5.

On the PM5v1, the logo is all white. If it is green, you have a PM5v2 or higher.

PM5v2 or higher: Green Concept2 Logo
