Celebrating 1 Year of Row Strength Success at Shasta Family YMCA with ErgZone

From Inspiration to 16 Million Meters: Shasta Family YMCA’s Dedicated Rowing Studio

February marked one full year since Shasta Family YMCA (YMCA CA) launched its dedicated rowing studio using ErgZone—a milestone celebrated with over 16 million meters logged by their community. This success story highlights a unique, growing fitness program that has brought an exciting, low-impact, full-body workout option to their members.

A Unique Offering in Redding

The inspiration for the dedicated rowing studio came after two YMCA instructors visited a Row House studio and saw the potential to bring the concept back home. At the time, nothing similar existed locally, and the Shasta Family YMCA remains the only dedicated row studio in Redding.

The program has been a rewarding addition to the community, offering a fresh and engaging workout. Member response has been "very positive," leading to increased usage of the rowing machines even outside of structured class times.

The Row Strength Experience

The YMCA’s "Row Strength" classes typically accommodate up to 15 participants and are rhythm-based, meaning participants row to the beat of the music with different build formats. A defining feature of the class is the mid-workout segment, where participants step off the machines for 10–15 minutes of complementary strength training to target supporting muscle groups.

The most common feedback is that members enjoy rowing far more than they expected, citing that the combination of music, group energy, and rhythm-based movement makes the workout "fly by" while still delivering a challenging full-body experience.

ErgZone: The Engine for Engagement

ErgZone has played a key role in shaping the rowing experience from day one. The most valuable aspect has been the collective data display on screens, which allows the class to set shared goals for power, pace, or distance. This display enhances motivation and engagement by fostering a supportive, team-based environment where participants push themselves together.

Looking ahead, logging over 16 million meters represents the YMCA’s success in "meeting people where they are in their fitness journey" and providing multiple pathways into movement—be it cardio, strength, or something new.
